One thing Okeechobee had in abundance, besides catfish, was alligators and there was an equally large demand for their hides. He was also a commercial fisherman, as there was a large demand for Okeechobee catfish in the North. My grandfather had a few cows on small ranch, raised and canned their vegetables and even traded with the Indians in that area, vegetables for deer or turkeys. Durward and the family pretty much lived off the land for a while. My grandparents moved to Okeechobee either 1918 or 1919, settling near the mouth of the Kissimmee River and were some of the first people to move into this area.
